Here is some helpful information for choosing a sponsor
SPONSORS
A sponsor accompanies you throughout your journey in Confirmation. Choosing a confirmation sponsor is best approached with prayer and thought. The Catholic Church requires that all sponsors be 16 years of age or older, already confirmed and an active Catholic. It is asked that the sponsor is not a parent.
Beyond these requirements the most important qualities are someone who is interested in your confirmation experience, and has a faith that you respect. It is helpful if they live close to you (same city), but not necessary. Examples of sponsor are: godparent, sibling, relative, or family friend.
There should be a strong and open relationship between the sponsor and candidate, so that you can share your faith and ask them questions (other than with your parents and confirmation team). You are encouraged to meet with your sponsor over the course of the year. This is a good opportunity to discus your faith, perhaps take part in an outreach project (ie soup kitchen), or attend Mass together.
Sponsors are present during the ceremony for the Sacrament of Confirmation in Spring 2010. Sponsors are also encouraged to attend the two evening sessions throughout the year were parents/sponsors may be present.
